“It is such happiness when good people get together--and they always do.”

                                            --   Jane Austen, Emma

We at the OR & SW Washington Region of the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA) have 5 reading group meetings and 2 special programs each year. The reading groups are free, fun, lively, informal discussions held in a member's home with tea and light refreshments (although we always manage to make lunch of it). The spring and winter programs usually have a keynote speaker and other interesting activities.

Our annual December program celebrates both Jane's birthday (December 16, 1775) and the holiday season. For December 2003 we are enjoying a Regency Ball with a Dance Master and presentation of English Country dancing. For December 2002 we had a speaker on "Jane Austen and the Royal Navy" (in full dress uniform).

Our region does not charge any dues, but to remain on our mailing list, we ask that you become a member of the National organization. That would entitle you to the newsletter, the journal Persuasions, and attendance at the Annual General Meeting, as well as a place on our list for all local announcements. We sometimes send out notices of other Jane-related activities in the area and have been known to get together as a group for a movie, play, or concert that we know our members would enjoy.

If you would like additional information at any time, please do feel free to email me. The Society’s website – www.jasna.org - and the links there also provide a wealth of wonderful information about the Society and Jane Austen.
